# How do I assign a color to a layer?

Color-code your Layers in the Layers sidebar by tapping the **color dot** next to a Layer name and choosing from the color swatches. The color even carries through to a new draft after [Note Transfer](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/how-do-i-transfer-my-notes-1khpcd8/).

Color-coding is one of the simplest ways to make a complex [Layers](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/what-are-layers-and-how-do-i-use-them-1ozes9v/) setup easy to scan — at a glance, you can tell which Layer is which.

1. Tap **Layers** on the Top Toolbar:

| ✅ TIP: If the Layers icon isn't showing in the Top Toolbar, touch or click the plus sign on the right side to show additional icons. To pin it permanently, see [Customizing the Top Toolbar](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/more-icons-and-customizing-the-top-toolbar-v1u97a/).

2. Tap the **color dot** to the left of the name of the Layer you want to colorize:

3. The Color Selector opens. Tap the color you'd like to assign:

That's it — your Layer is now highlighted in that color, and the color carries through to a new draft after Note Transfer.
