# How do I change my default Layer name?

Anytime a file is opened in Scriptation, a base Layer is created on which you can annotate.

The default name for this Layer is **Device Name's Layer**.

Device names are often generic, so once you start collaborating with teammates (through [Live Layers](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/what-are-live-layers-and-how-do-i-get-set-up-1fowibn/) or [Layer Export](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/how-to-share-layers-with-export-14uqv6c/), for example), you'll want Layer names to be as descriptive as possible.

Here's how to change it!

### Setting Your Author Name

###### In Scriptation 6.0 and later

1. Open Settings by tapping the **three-dot menu** (**⋯**) at the top-right of the screen and choosing **Settings**, or by opening the File Browser and tapping **Settings** at the bottom-left of that panel;
2. Tap into the **Author Name** field and type a new name;
3. Tap **Save**.

###### In Scriptation 5.1.16 and earlier

1. Tap the **File Browser** (the three-line icon at the top-left of the screen);
2. At the bottom of the panel, tap **Settings**;
3. Tap into the **Author Name** field and type a new name. Tap **Save**.

| ✅ TIP: Your Author Name is used to create the default Layer on all future documents on this device. Scriptation automatically adds **'s Notes** to the end of your Author Name when creating that Layer.

Once completed, you will still have to adjust the name of the Default Layer in your *current* document. Here's how:

### Renaming the Default Layer in Your Current Document

The Author Name change applies to new documents going forward. To rename the default Layer in your *current* document:

1. Tap **Layers** on the Top Toolbar;

2. Tap the **three-dot menu** (**⋯**) in the Layers panel and select **Edit**;

3. Tap the Layer name to edit it in the text box that appears, then tap **OK** in the top right when you're done.
