# How do I copy and paste annotations?

Copying and pasting annotations is handy for duplicating a note, recovering deleted ones after a Note Transfer, or moving notes across layers and pages.

Copy and paste can help with:

1. Duplicating an annotation (or consider making it a [Saved Annotation](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/what-are-saved-annotations-and-how-do-i-use-them-1rerp7z/));
2. Retrieving [deleted annotations](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/how-does-scriptation-handle-a-pages-and-deleted-pages-17fa05u/) after a Note Transfer;
3. Moving annotations across [layers](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/what-are-layers-and-how-do-i-use-them-1ozes9v/) and pages;
4. Manually rebuilding annotations page-by-page when a Note Transfer doesn't map them correctly (see note below).

|| 📝 NOTE: If a script's formatting causes Note Transfer to misplace or merge your highlights (for example, when page headers and action/cue lines share the same left margin, which is common in live event or non-standard script formats), running a [Script Comparison](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/how-do-i-compare-two-scripts-1x1z1x1/) first can help you identify exactly which pages changed. You can then create a "sides" packet combining the unaffected pages from your old draft with only the new pages from the revised draft (see [Creating sides from multiple episodes' scripts](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/creating-sides-from-multiple-episodes-scripts-q918z1/)), and manually copy/paste/redo your annotations from the old draft for just those new pages. This avoids having to redo annotations across the entire script.

Start by **touching or clicking** the annotation you'd like to copy. From the pop-up menu, choose **Copy**; the pop-up then disappears:

|| 📝 NOTE: Using a [Note](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/how-do-i-use-notes-w7mi38/) and not seeing Copy? Go to the [Annotation Outline](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/outline-viewing-and-searching-your-annotations-6opg9t/) and **press + hold** on your note to copy it.

Next, navigate to where you'd like to paste — a different page, or even a different Scriptation file. **Touch or click, then hold** anywhere on the screen and select **Paste**:

The annotation is pasted in, with additional options (which vary by annotation type):

* **Cut** — remove the annotation to place it elsewhere;
* **Copy** — copy the annotation to place it elsewhere;
* **Select More…** — add other annotations to this selection group;
* **Edit** — edit a pasted text annotation;
* **Style Palette** — [adjust](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/using-the-style-palette-inspector-1r35re7/) the annotation's attributes;
* **Save** — [save](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/what-are-saved-annotations-and-how-do-i-use-them-1rerp7z/) this annotation for later use;
* **Layer** — move or copy the annotation to [a different layer](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/how-do-i-move-or-copy-annotations-between-layers-brzu5p/);
* **Note** — attach a [Note](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/how-can-i-use-attached-notes-uzvs60/) to this annotation;
* **Tag** — tag the annotation into a category;
* **Trash** — delete this annotation.
