# How do I get Lining to work on Sides?

Lining only reads **Native** script pages. To use Lining on Sides created in Scriptation, lock the Sides file via the [Page Manager](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/what-is-the-page-manager-k7edhm/) so Scriptation treats those pages as Native.

|| 📝 NOTE: Lining Tools is an [Industry Pro](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/what-is-scriptation-industry-pro-1jfjecg/) feature.

If the Sides were created **outside** of Scriptation, also check that the file isn't a [flattened PDF](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/what-is-a-flattened-pdf-p2vq4m/).

##### Background: Native vs. Added pages

Scriptation handles two kinds of pages:

* **Native** — Official script pages, in their imported order;
* **Inserted / Added** — User-created pages, such as [Sides](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/how-do-i-create-script-sides-1rfarbu/), [Facing Pages](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/what-are-facing-pages-and-how-do-i-add-them-1qh8gjs/), and copy-pasted pages.

After using the [Sides Tool](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/how-do-i-create-script-sides-1rfarbu/), the PDF is by default recognized as entirely Inserted/Added Pages. This gives you maximum flexibility for note-taking and reordering into shooting order — but [Lining](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/how-do-i-use-lining-tools-pzb2l3/) only reads the text of **Native** pages.

##### Enable Lock mode

To enable Lining on Sides, lock the Sides file via the Page Manager. For the step-by-step walkthrough, see [How do I lock or unlock a Sides file?](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/how-do-i-lock-or-unlock-a-sides-file-1t2hkr5/).

||| ⚠️ HEADS UP: Once Lining has been created on Locked Sides, we don't recommend Unlocking those pages.
