# How do I use Compare Scripts?

**Compare Scripts** automatically compares two drafts of your script and generates a scene-by-scene PDF report of every text change — perfect to run alongside a [Note Transfer](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/how-do-i-transfer-my-notes-1khpcd8/) so you can see exactly what's different in the new draft.

### How to run Compare Scripts

1. [Open](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/importing-and-opening-scripts-in-scriptation-k34r8d/) your **new** draft in Scriptation;
2. While in the tab for the new draft, touch or click the **Transfer** button on the [Top Toolbar](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/an-overview-of-the-top-toolbar-i5y1y8/):

3. **Select the previous draft** you want to compare against (and transfer notes from). For this example, we'll select "Draft 2 - Try Transfer":

4. The Transfer Annotations window appears. Toggle on **Compare Scripts**:

5. Touch or click **Next** or **Begin**. 

|| 📝 NOTE: Running Compare Scripts on a previous draft with zero annotations? You'll see a "No Annotations Detected" alert — tap **Transfer Anyway** to continue generating the report.

|| 📝 NOTE: Users with *multiple* [layers](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/what-are-layers-and-how-do-i-use-them-1ozes9v/) of annotations will be taken to the Layer Selection window. Touch or click the checkboxes of the specific layer(s) you'd like to transfer.

6. The transfer takes a couple of seconds and shows an overview of any changes between drafts. Touch or click **OK**;
7. The Compare Scripts report is generated;
8. You'll be prompted to name the report. Touch or click **Save**:

9. Select a location to save the report and touch or click **Select**:

|| 📝 NOTE for Mac users: On Scriptation for Mac, the process is the same. Once the report is generated, you'll select a save location in Finder the way you would any other document.

10. Open the Compare Scripts report — each scene shows a breakdown of insertions, deletions, and changes:

### Compare Scripts vs Analyze

Scriptation has two ways to compare drafts, and they serve different purposes:

* **Compare Scripts** (this article) — a rule-based, scene-by-scene **text diff**. Every insertion, deletion, and change is listed exactly. Best when you need a precise, auditable record of what's different;
* [**Analyze**](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/what-is-the-analyze-tool-2rpem1/) — an **AI-generated summary** of the differences, written in clear natural language. Best when you want a quick read on the *meaning* of the changes rather than a complete diff.

Both are Industry Pro features and they're complementary — many users run Compare Scripts for the receipts and Analyze for the at-a-glance summary.
