# How do I use custom colors with Auto-Highlight?

[Auto-Highlight](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/what-is-auto-highlighting-17llf2q/) supports custom colors so you can pick any color you'd like for a character — beyond the 16 default presets.

|| 📝 NOTE: Custom Colors are a **temporary** selection. They're not saved to the character's name — when you turn the character's highlight off or deselect the custom color, the color picker resets to neutral. To save a color so it sticks with a character across every script, see [How do I save colors for characters with Auto-Highlight?](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/how-do-i-save-colors-for-characters-with-auto-highlight-1bvpwy1/) instead.

### Choosing a Custom Color

1. Tap the **Highlight** icon on the [Top Toolbar](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/an-overview-of-the-top-toolbar-i5y1y8/) to open the Auto-Highlight sidebar;

2. Tap the **color dot** next to a character's name to display the color options;

3. Tap the **multi-color dot** to open the custom color picker;

4. Pick a color from the grid (the first tab in the picker). The other tabs are a color wheel and RGB / HSB / greyscale sliders.

* **Color grid** — tap the square of the color you want;
* **Color wheel** — tap the color you want and use the slider to adjust brightness;
* **Sliders** — set RGB, HSB, or greyscale values directly.

5. Once your color is set, tap anywhere on the script page to apply it. Tap again to hide the Auto-Highlight sidebar.
