# How do I use the Text Marking tools? (Highlight, Underline, Squiggle and Strikethrough)

Scriptation has four text marking tools on the [Annotation Toolbar](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/an-overview-of-the-annotation-toolbar-6jmhwg/) — **Highlight**, **Underline**, **Squiggle**, and **Strikethrough**. Each works in straight lines directly on top of your script text:

|| 📝 NOTE: Underline and Squiggle sometimes share the same icon box, depending on the size and orientation of your device. **Touch / click + hold** the small **triangle** next to one icon to reveal the other tool.

### Configuring the marking

**Touch or click the annotation** (be sure no other tools are selected) to display this palette:

* **Copy** — copy the annotation to paste elsewhere; touch and hold (iPad / iPhone) or right-click / Control + click / two-finger trackpad touch (Mac) anywhere on the page to display the Paste command;
* **Type** — change the annotation type (e.g., highlight to strikethrough);
* **Color** — change its color;
* **Opacity** — adjust its opacity;
* **Layer** — move or copy the annotation to another layer;
* **Tag** — assign the highlighted text to a tag category;
* **Note** — add an [Attached Note](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/how-can-i-use-attached-notes-uzvs60/);
* **Trash** — delete the annotation.

On an iPad or iPhone, touch and hold a piece of text to display selection pins and the standard iOS palette to copy, highlight, underline, squiggle, strikethrough, and create a link:

More commands appear if you tap the right-pointing arrow at the end of the palette.

|| 📝 NOTE: Only free-drawn annotations (Drawing and Freeform Highlight) can be removed with the [eraser tool](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/how-do-i-erase-or-delete-an-annotation-1thgi2e/). Text markings must be deleted with the Trash icon.

### Removing or changing a Squiggle or Strikethrough

Since the Eraser tool only works on free-drawn annotations, use this method to remove or change a squiggly line or strikethrough:

1. Make sure no tools are selected in the toolbar.
2. Tap directly on the squiggly line or strikethrough.
3. A menu will appear — tap **Trash** to delete it, or tap **Type** to switch it to a different marking (e.g., change a squiggle to a strikethrough).

**Undo** (two-finger tap, or ⌘Z on Mac) also works immediately after placing any annotation if you want to quickly reverse it.
