# My Apple Pencil icon is gone or the Pencil no longer works

The Apple Pencil icon in Scriptation's Annotation Toolbar is a shortcut that appears once you've used your Pencil to draw. If it's missing, the fix is usually quick. If your Pencil itself has stopped working, re-pair it through Settings.

### The icon is missing from the Annotation toolbar

The Pencil shortcut only appears in Scriptation's Annotation Toolbar after the Pencil has been used. To restore it:

1. Tap any annotation tool (such as **Pen** or **Highlighter**) in Scriptation's Annotation Toolbar;
2. Use your Apple Pencil to draw a quick mark on the page;
3. The Apple Pencil icon should reappear in the toolbar.

|| 📝 NOTE: If you have **Only Draw with Apple Pencil** turned on in iPad Settings, finger taps won't trigger any drawing — only the Pencil will. That's expected behavior; see [I'm accidentally erasing my notes with my palm or Apple Pencil.](https://help.scriptation.com/en/article/im-accidentally-erasing-my-notes-with-my-palm-or-apple-pencil-6brz0z/) for context.

### The Pencil itself isn't working

If the Pencil isn't drawing anywhere — not in Scriptation, not in Notes, not in any other app — it's likely a Bluetooth or charging issue. Try these in order:

1. **Check the battery.** Attach the Pencil to your iPad's magnetic connector (Apple Pencil Pro and 2nd Gen) or plug it into the Lightning port (1st Gen) for at least 30 seconds.
2. **Check Bluetooth.** Open **Settings → Bluetooth** and make sure Bluetooth is turned on.
3. **Re-pair the Pencil:**
    * Go to **Settings → Bluetooth**;
    * Under **My Devices**, find your Apple Pencil and tap the **Info** (ⓘ) icon;
    * Tap **Forget This Device**;
    * Re-attach the Pencil to your iPad's magnetic connector (or plug it in for 1st Gen). When the **Pair** button appears, tap it.

4. **Restart the iPad.** Press and hold the top button + a volume button until the power-off slider appears, then power back on.
5. **Reopen Scriptation.** The Apple Pencil icon should reappear in the toolbar the next time you draw.
