Can multiple people collaborate on one document?

Yes — Scriptation makes it easy to share notes across a production without anyone stepping on each other's work.

The typical Scriptation collaboration workflow is for each person to keep their own copy of the script and selectively share specific Layers of notes with the team. Think of it like a production binder: your notes stay yours, and you choose which Layer to hand to whom.

This approach lets you:

  • Keep some notes private and selectively share others;
  • Send and receive your collaborator's notes directly onto your own version of the script — much faster than walking pages over, and you only see the Layers you've chosen to add;
  • Avoid file-conflict problems that come from multiple people editing the same shared file.

⚠️ HEADS UP: We don't recommend hosting one shared file in a cloud folder and having multiple people work on it at the same time. Every time someone opens the document there's a risk of conflicted copies. Sharing Layers is the safer, faster way to collaborate.

Three ways to share

  • Export your Layers — Share just your notes as a Layer file (.slf), so your collaborator can drop them onto their own copy of the script. Best for working across personal licenses or different productions;
  • Live Layers — Instantly share Layers within your team, with no file passing required. Available to Scriptation Team and Team Studio users;
  • Export the file — Share the whole script (with all your notes baked in) by email, AirDrop, or messaging. Best for one-off sends and reviews.

📝 NOTE: Exporting Layers is an Industry Pro feature. Scriptation users without a paid license can still receive Layers free of charge.
