Using Multitasking (the 3-dot icon at the top) for Split View and Slide-Over on an iPad

Learn to use your iPad's Multitasking feature with Scriptation

Yes, Scriptation fully supports this recent iOS innovation, which allows you to work on multiple apps simultaneously. It's the 3-dot icon at the very top of the screen:

There are two types of Multitasking:

Split View: When 2 apps are side by side;
Slide Over: When an app slides in front of any open app, allowing you to have 3 apps open at once.

In this step-by-step guide, we're going to Multitask Scriptation with the native Files app to play a video alongside your script, and Gmail.

NOTE: Multitasking is exclusively available on iPadOS, and is not compatible with all apps.

iOS 15 and later

NOTE: These videos show a slightly older user interface but the instructions are still accurate.

With Scriptation open in the foreground, tap the three dots.

From the Multitasking menu, tap the middle icon for Split View, or the right icon for Slide Over:

With Scriptation moved to the side of the screen, tap the app that you want to Multitask with. Below, the middle Split View icon was tapped, with the Files app. You can drag the app divider to adjust the split:

TIP: To close Split View, drag the app divider fully over the app that you want to close.

Now let's open a 3rd app. By tapping the three dots on your 2nd app, and selecting the Slide Over icon (right), the app will temporarily hide. Then, tap the three dots in Scriptation, select the Split View, and select a third app. By swiping from the right side of your screen to center, your hidden 3rd app will reappear:

TIP: To close a Slide Over, touch and hold the long dash icon along the bottom of the window, and swipe up. Swipe up a second time to exit the app.

iOS 14

Make sure that Multitasking is enabled on your device. From the Apple Settings menu, tap Home Screen & Dock. Under the Multitasking header, toggle on "Enable Multiple Apps".

Open Scriptation as well as the other apps you'd like to multitask with -- so all apps appear on the Dock:

TIP: Don't see the Dock, slide one finger up from the bottom edge of your screen.

With Scriptatation open in the foreground, press + hold + drag your other app's icon to the left or right edge of the screen:

Once you release your finger, the two apps will share your screen in Split View. You can drag the app divider to adjust the split:

TIP: To close Split View, drag the app divider fully over the app that you want to close.

Now let's open a third app. Press + hold + drag your third app's icon to the main area of the screen. This creates a Slide Over:

TIP: To close a Slide Over, touch and hold the long dash icon along the bottom of the window and swipe up. Swipe up a second time to exit the app.
