Group and Merge notes with the Selection tool

With the Selection tool, you can combine multiple annotations into one — making it easy to move, copy/paste, delete, or resize a set of related notes together.

The Selection tool handles two related tasks:

  1. Group — combines multiple types of annotations into one (Text Boxes, Sticky Notes, Shapes, Arrows, Lines, Images, Stamps, and the free-draw Marker and Freeform Highlight).
  2. Merge — combines multiple free-draw annotations into one (Marker and Freeform Highlight only).

✅ TIP: You can tap (or click while holding Shift on Mac) to select annotations that aren't next to each other. Turn on the Selection tool and tap (or Shift-click) to select or deselect.

Group

Here's a script page with several annotation types: an Image (the set plan), a Text Box (the label), a green Sticky Note, and free-draw annotations on the set plan.

To group them, tap the Selection tool on the Annotation Toolbar. Then, with your finger or Apple Pencil, press + move over the area with the annotations you'd like to group. (Or, with the Selection tool on, tap — or Shift-click on Mac — the annotations you want.)

✅ TIP: Need help finding the Selection tool? Press + hold on the Eraser to reveal it.

Once selected, a pop-up bar appears. Tap Group.

Now all of your annotations are treated as one!

Ungroup

Want to ungroup? Tap the annotation again and select Ungroup.

Merge

For the free-draw ink tools — Marker and Freeform Highlight — you can also merge annotations into one permanently.

Tap the Selection tool, then press + move over the area you'd like to combine (or tap / Shift-click the annotations you want).

Once selected, a pop-up bar appears. Tap Merge.

📝 NOTE: Merging annotations cannot be undone.

The selected free-draw annotations are now merged, so the Inspector, Copy/Paste, Save, and Delete treat them as one combined object.

📝 NOTE: On Scriptation for Mac, the Selection tool may take a few tries to recognize multiple annotations on certain devices. Deselect and reselect the Selection tool, then try again starting your click + drag from a different spot on the screen.
