Transfer is crashing? How to fix non-native page issues

Note Transfer crashing during the Analyzing phase? It's almost always a page assignment issue. Some of the pages in your old draft are being read as Inserted pages when they should be Native pages — and because Note Transfer relies on Native page assignments to match content between drafts, that mismatch can crash the transfer.

This commonly happens when a script was created or modified using an external PDF tool — like a PDF splitter or combiner — before being imported into Scriptation.

The fix: use Master Edit Mode to reassign those pages as Native, prep the destination script, and then run the transfer.

📝 NOTE: This process has a few steps. We recommend reading through the full article before getting started.

Part 1: Fix the source script (old draft)

First, tell Scriptation that the pages in your old (annotated) script are Native pages.

Enable Master Edit Mode

Open the old draft and enable Master Edit Mode.

Reassign pages as Native

  1. Touch or click the Page Manager icon on the Top Toolbar;
  2. Touch or click the Master button;
  3. You'll see checkmarks on pages that Scriptation considers Inserted. Uncheck every page that should be a Native script page — this tells Scriptation they are official script pages;

📝 NOTE: On macOS, a regular click will check a page but won't uncheck it. To uncheck a page, hold ⌘ (Command) and click. Right-clicking will not work — it must be ⌘+Click.

  1. Touch or click Save.

✅ TIP: After saving, you can verify your changes by touching or clicking Edit in the Page Manager view. Native pages cannot be selected or moved — if the pages are locked in place, you've set them correctly.

Part 2: Prep the destination script (new draft)

If the source script had an extra page (like a cover page, title page, or score page created outside Scriptation), the destination script needs a matching page so the transfer lines up correctly.

Add a matching page

  1. Open the new draft in Scriptation;
  2. Navigate to the Page Manager view;
  3. Touch or click Edit, then AddAdd Page to insert a blank page where the extra page exists in the old draft (e.g., at the very top);
  4. Touch or click Save.

Mark the new page as Native

  1. Touch or click the Master button in the Page Manager view;
  2. Uncheck the page you just added so it is marked as Native;
  3. Touch or click Save.

Part 3: Run the transfer

  1. While in the new draft, touch or click the Transfer button on the Top Toolbar;
  2. Select the old (annotated) script as the source;
  3. Touch or click Begin.

Your notes should now transfer successfully!

Part 4: Copy over any remaining pages

If the old draft had an extra page (like a cover or score page) whose content didn't transfer automatically, you can copy it over manually:

  1. Open the old draft and go to the Page Manager view;
  2. Touch or click Edit, then Select the page you need to copy;
  3. Touch or click Copy;
  4. Switch to the new draft and go to the Page Manager view;
  5. Touch or click Edit, then Paste — the page will be inserted;
  6. If a blank placeholder page remains, you can remove it: go back to Master, mark the blank page as Inserted (checked), touch or click Save, then go to Edit, select the blank page, and touch or click Remove;
  7. Touch or click Save.

Part 5: Disable Master Edit Mode

Once everything looks good, disable Master Edit Mode so you don't accidentally modify page assignments later.

And that's all there is to it!

⚠️ HEADS UP: If you're still experiencing crashes after following these steps, please use the "Send us an email" button at the bottom of this page. Include details about how your script was created and what PDF tools were used, and send us the script so we can investigate directly.
