What are Layers, and how do I use them?

Layers are one of Scriptation's most powerful features. Think of them as transparent overlays on top of your script — each Layer holds a set of annotations you can show, hide, color, reorder, and share independently. Use them to separate your notes by department, meeting, draft, or workflow.

To open Layers, tap the Layers icon on the Top Toolbar.

Adding a Layer

In the Layers sidebar, tap + Add Layer, name it, and tap Save. In this example, we're creating a Layer for the Art Department's notes:

The Active Layer

The Active Layer is the one currently being edited — any annotations you make go into this Layer until you switch. It's marked with a pencil icon in the Layers sidebar, and the Layer name is bold:

How do I use Tagging?

Scriptation's Tagging tools let you break down a script for production and easily share the work product with the appropriate people. Activate Tagging Mode to assign categories to your annotation tools, then export that information into PDF or CSV reports. Tags transfer like every other annotation, so it's the best way to track elements essential to you through every script revision.

Getting Started

With your script open, touch Tagging on the Top Toolbar to enter Tagging Mode.

Any of the annotation tools can be used to tag text from the script. Text boxes, sticky notes, images, and stamps can be inserted and tagged as well.

Importing and Opening Scripts in Scriptation

|| 📝 NOTE: Scriptation can only open PDF files. If you're using a standard screenwriting program such as Final Draft or Writer Duet, save or export the script as a PDF — that's the file you'll be bringing into Scriptation.

Import on iPad / iPhone

Open the PDF from its current location;
Tap the Share icon at the top right;

Tap Import from Scriptation from the actions list, or select Scriptation from the list of favorite apps.

From the Import screen, you can navigate within your Cloud or local folders. Once you've landed on the intended destination, tap Select.

How do I check which Apple ID is logged into my device?

Accepted Answer

Your Apple ID controls every App Store purchase on your device — including your Scriptation Industry Pro subscription. If Industry Pro is working on one device but not on another, the most common cause is that the two devices are signed in with different Apple IDs.

|| 📝 NOTE: In Scriptation 6.0 and later, your Scriptation account is separate from your Apple ID. The Apple ID controls App Store purchases and Industry Pro entitlement; the Scriptation account only tracks AI Voices usage.

How to check your Apple ID

On iPad or iPhone

Open the Settings app on your home screen;
Tap your name/photo at the very top;
The email shown under your name is the Apple ID currently signed in. Scroll down to see every other device sharing this Apple ID.

To switch Apple IDs, scroll to the bottom and tap Sign Out.

On Mac

Open System Settings (Apple menu → System Settings);
Click Apple ID at the top of the left-hand panel;
The email shown at the top is the Apple ID currently signed in. Other devices sharing this Apple ID are listed below.

To switch Apple IDs, click Sign Out at the bottom right.

The Annotation Toolbar has these tools:

The toolbar will expand or contract depending on screen size and device orientation. If you don't see a tool icon you need, it might be combined with another tool's icon — these combination icons have a caret in the lower-right corner.

Tool Functions

Text Marking

Text Highlight — highlight text;
Underline — underline text;
Squiggle — underline text with a squiggly line;
Strikethrough — cross out text.

Typing

Text — enter notes using a keyboard, Scribble, or voice;
Note — insert a collapsible text note.

Ink

Drawing — free write or draw with ink;
Freeform Highlight — write or draw with a highlighter.

Shapes

Arrow — draw an arrow;
Line — draw a line;
Rectangle — draw a square or a rectangle;
Ellipse — draw a circle or an ellipse.

Media

How do I transfer my notes?

When you receive a new draft of your script, Scriptation's Note Transfer moves every annotation from your previous draft to the new one — in seconds, in the right places.

Here's a common scenario. You have a draft of a script marked up with all your notes — let's call it the Studio Draft. Ding — that's your email, and the Network Draft just arrived. Here's how to bring all of your notes into the new draft.

Select the previous draft you want to transfer your notes from. For this example, we'll select "AotTB - Studio Draft":
