What are Layers, and how do I use them?

One of Scriptation’s most powerful features is Layers, which enables you to organize sets of annotations. Hide or show layers based on your current workflow, and share layers of notes with your team.

We’ll start by adding a Layer. From the Top Toolbar, select the Layers tool.

Add a Layer

Select + Add Layer at the bottom of the Layers side panel, then name it and press Save. In this example, we’re creating a set of annotations for the Art Department.

Coloring a Layer

Assign a color to this layer with the color picker (touch or click the circle to the left of the layer's name to show the color swatches):

Showing / Hiding

Toggle this layer’s visibility by touching or clicking the closed eye to toggle the layer to visible and the open eye to toggle the layer to hidden.

Active Layer

The Active Layer is the one that is currently editable. Even if a Layer is shown, it may not be the active layer. To make it the active layer, simply select its label. The Layers sidebar will be hidden, and you'll be back at your script with the

How do I use Tagging?

Scriptation's Tagging tools let you break down a script for production and easily share the work product with the appropriate people. Activate Tagging Mode to assign categories to your annotation tools, then export that information into PDF or CSV reports. Tags transfer like every other annotation, so it's the best way to track elements essential to you through every script revision.

Getting Started

With your script open, touch Tagging on the Top Toolbar to enter Tagging Mode. If the Tagging icon isn't there, touch or click the plus sign on the right to display more icons and then select it.

Any of the annotation tools can be used to tag text from the script. Text boxes, sticky notes, images, and stamps can be inserted and tagged as well.

|| 📝 NOTE: Scriptation can only open PDF files. If you're using a standard screenwriting program such as Final Draft or Writer Duet, save or export the script as a PDF — that's the file you'll be bringing into Scriptation.

Import on iPad / iPhone

Open the PDF from its current location, tap the Share icon at the top right, then tap Import from Scriptation. This Apple article shows how to edit the favorites row to add the Scriptation icon.

| ✅ TIP: If you don't see Scriptation in the row of favorites, swipe left and tap More. The full list of apps will be displayed; tap Scriptation. If you still don't see Scriptation, keep in mind that it will only appear for PDF files.

From the Import screen, you can navigate within your Cloud or local folders. Once you've landed on the intended destination, tap Select.

How do I check which Apple ID is logged into my device?

Need to check which Apple ID is logged into your device?

On any Apple device, all subscriptions are linked through your Apple ID.

Therefore, if an Industry Pro subscription is working on one device but not on another, it's possible that the two devices are logged in with separate Apple IDs. Here's how to check.

iPad / iPhone

Tap the Apple Settings icon from your device's home screen;
Tap on Your Name/Photo in the upper left corner;
The email address on the top right is the Apple ID that is currently logged into your device. The other devices that share that Apple ID are shown on the bottom of the window. To sign in with a different Apple ID, click Sign Out at the bottom right.

Mac

Click the System Preferences (Apple Settings) icon;
Click Apple ID — it's the first menu item in the left-hand panel;

The toolbar will expand or contract depending on screen size and device orientation. If you don't see a tool icon you need, it might be combined with another tool's icon — these combination icons have a caret in the lower-right corner.

Text Marking

Text Highlight — highlight text;
Underline — underline text;
Squiggle — underline text with a squiggly line;
Strikethrough — cross out text.

Typing

Text — enter notes using a keyboard, Scribble, or voice;

To learn more about Scriptation's Note Transfer feature, let's lay out a common scenario. You have a draft of a script which is marked up with all of your notes. Let's call it the Table Draft. And ding – that was your email alert – you just received a new script, the Shooting Draft, and need to Transfer all of your notes to it.

Start by opening the new draft in Scriptation.
While in the tab for the new draft, tap the Transfer button on the Top Toolbar.

Select the previous draft you want to transfer your notes from. For this example, we'll select "Revisions – Table Draft."

The Transfer Annotations window now appears, showing the cover pages of both the previous and new drafts, with an arrow pointing in the direction notes will be transferred.
