Why can't I open more than three documents at a time?
The free version of Scriptation lets you have up to three documents open at a time. To open more, you'll need a paid subscription or trial — Industry Pro, Team, On Campus, or Enterprise all remove the limit.
Why there's a limit
Scriptation is built and maintained by a small team that depends on paid subscriptions to keep the app maintained on yearly OS updates and support the development of new features. Limiting how many documents can be open at once in the free version is one of the ways we make the value of an upgrade visible — without locking the app's core annotation and transfer features behind a paywall.
Managing your three open tabs
If you've hit the three-document limit on free Scriptation, you can:
- Close an open tab in the File Browser to make room for a new one.
- Save your work first, then close — Scriptation auto-saves continuously, but it's never a bad habit.
Upgrade options
If three documents at a time isn't enough for the way you work, the paid tiers remove the limit completely:
- Industry Pro — Scriptation's flagship toolkit for film and TV professionals;
- Team and Enterprise — group licenses for productions, departments, and studios.
If you feel that Scriptation provides great value to your work, we hope you'll consider supporting our growing team and the development of new features!
