An Overview of the Settings Menu

Scriptation's Settings menu gives you full control over how the app looks and works.

New in v6.0, all of your settings are organized in a central Settings modal with easy-to-navigate tabs.

How to Open Settings

There are two ways to access Settings:

From a Document

Tap the three-dot menu () at the top right of the screen, then select Settings.

From the File Browser

If you're in the File Browser, tap Settings in the footer at the bottom of the File Browser panel.

💡 TIP: If the File Browser is closed, tap the three-line menu () at the top left to open it first.

iPad & Mac

On iPad and Mac, the Settings modal appears as a center window with a sidebar on the left showing all of the available tabs, and the settings page on the right.

iPhone

On iPhone, Settings opens as a slide-up sheet. Tap any tab to open its settings page, then use the back arrow to return to the main list.

Settings Tabs

The Settings modal is organized into 11 tabs, split into two groups:

App Settings

  • General
  • Toolbars
  • Annotations
  • Layers
  • Live Layers
  • Tagging
  • Playback

📝 NOTE: The App Settings tabs are mode-specific. General, Toolbars, Annotations, Layers, Live Layers, and Tagging are only available in Annotate mode. The Playback tab is only available in Playback mode. If you try to access a tab from the wrong mode, Scriptation will prompt you to switch.

Category List

Manage every category in your main category picker from one place. Recolor any category by tapping its color dot, or reorder categories by dragging the handles on the right side of each row.

Tap Edit in the top-right of the list to access additional options:

  • Hide or show a category from your main category picker — hidden categories appear under a separate Hidden section in this list;
  • Rename any custom category you've created;
  • Delete any custom category you've created.

📝 NOTE: Default categories can be recolored, reordered, and hidden, but they can't be renamed or deleted.

📝 NOTE: Tagging is an Industry Pro feature.

Playback

The Playback tab is only accessible in Playback mode and controls how Scriptation reads and displays your script.

📝 NOTE: If you try to access Playback settings from another mode, Scriptation will prompt you to switch.

Display

  • Font type — Choose the font Scriptation uses for playback (default: Courier Prime);
  • Font size — Set the playback font size (default: 20);
  • Overlay — Choose how the line being read is visually emphasized. Choose Highlight (grey highlight around the line), Fade (default — slightly dims everything except the current line), or None (no emphasis).

Auto-Highlight

  • Characters — Tap to choose which character(s) to auto-highlight for the active script;
  • Highlight format — Choose Name and dialogue (default), Name only, or Dialogue only;
  • Color presets — Set the 16 preset colors Scriptation uses to auto-highlight elements in the order they're turned on. These same colors fill the palette in the color slide-out when you change the color on an individual element;
  • Saved colors — Lock in a specific color for a character so that character appears in the same color in every script you open going forward.

📝 NOTE: These are the same Auto-Highlight settings you'll find under the Annotations tab — they're shared between Annotate and Playback modes. Any change you make in one place is reflected in the other; this section is just a shortcut so you can adjust them without switching modes.

Playback

  • Language for voices — Tap to change the default language for narrator and character voices (default: the language set for your device);
  • Saved voices — Tap to manage saved voice assignments for your characters;
  • Loop — Choose how playback repeats. Options: Off (default), Scene (repeats the current scene), Script (repeats the entire script).

Rehearse

  • Cue mode — Choose how Scriptation decides when to resume after your line. Options: On voice (default — Scriptation listens for you to finish your line and resumes when you do) and Automatic gap (Scriptation pauses for as long as it would take to read your line aloud, then resumes — adjust the pacing with Gap length below);
  • Gap length — When Cue mode is set to Automatic gap, this controls the reading speed used to calculate the pause (default: 1x). Higher values (e.g., 1.5x, 2x) shorten the pause; lower values (e.g., 0.5x) lengthen it.
  • Line reminders — Choose whether to hear your line read aloud as a reminder. Options: Off (default), Before (hear your line before the pause), After (hear your line after the pause).

Record

  • Video preview — Choose where the video preview displays during recording. Options: None (hides the preview), Corner (default — draggable thumbnail), Full (fills the screen with the script overlaid);
  • Camera — Choose Front (default) or Back;
  • Slate countdown — Set the countdown duration before the slate appears. Range: 0s (default — no countdown) to 30s;
  • Record countdown — Set the countdown duration before recording starts. Range: 0s (default — no countdown) to 15s.

✅ TIP: For a walkthrough of how the different presets (Table Read, Rehearsal, View Only, Custom) use these settings, see What are Playback Presets?.

📝 NOTE: Playback is an Industry Pro feature.
