How do I import a layer file I received?

Received a Scriptation Layer File (.slf) from a collaborator? Open it in Scriptation and pick the target script — the Layer drops onto your copy intact, with all of its notes ready to toggle on and off.

📝 NOTE: This video shows a slightly older user interface, but the instructions are still accurate.

Layers is one of Scriptation's most popular features — it lets you organize annotations into separate overlays that can be toggled on and off, and shared with collaborators.

Importing on iPad / iPhone

When you receive a .slf file by email, AirDrop, or messaging, tap the attachment to open it:

Tap the Open icon, then tap Scriptation:

📝 NOTE: Don't see Scriptation as an option? Swipe right and tap More to find Scriptation in the complete list of apps, or add Scriptation as an iOS Favorite App so it appears every time.

Scriptation will prompt you to select the file to import the Layer into. The matching file is highlighted in yellow:

That's it! The Layer is imported. Toggle it on or off in the Layers Menu.

Importing on Mac

  1. In Scriptation, open the script that will receive the imported Layer;
  2. From the email containing the .slf file, download the attachment:

  1. In your download location, two-finger click the .slf file → Open WithScriptation;
  2. Scriptation prompts you to select the file to import the Layer into:

That's it! The Layer is imported. Toggle it on or off in the Layers Menu.
