How do I add Dialogue Numbering to my script?

Scriptation can automatically number (or letter) every line of dialogue in your script — perfect for cueing, reference, and breakdown work where you need to call out specific lines quickly.

This is handled by the Dialogue Numbers Info Layer, part of Scriptation's Info Layers feature.

📝 NOTE: Info Layers are an Industry Pro feature.

Turning on dialogue numbers

  1. With your script open, tap Layers on the Top Toolbar;

✅ TIP: If the Layers icon isn't showing in the Top Toolbar, touch or click the plus sign on the right side to show additional icons. To pin it permanently, see Customizing the Top Toolbar.

  1. In the Layers side panel, find the Info Layers section and toggle on Dialogue Numbers;

  1. Scriptation counts every line of dialogue and places the corresponding number or letter next to each one.

Customizing dialogue numbers

Open the Settings option at the bottom of the Layers side panel to customize:

  • LocationLeft of character names, Above character names, or Right margin on the same line;
  • ColorBlack, Red, or Blue;
  • FormatNumerical (1, 2, 3, …) or Alphabetical (A, B, C, …);
  • OrderRestart Each Scene (count resets at every scene header) or Full Script (continuous count across the whole script).

📝 NOTE: Dialogue Numbering doesn't work for scenes that contain dual dialogue. Any scene with dual dialogue (and the full script, if Full Script order is selected) will have inaccurate numbering.
