Scriptation can automatically measure every scene in your script in eighths of a page and stamp the count onto the page for you — no manual counting required.

This is handled by the 8th Page Counts Info Layer, part of Scriptation's Info Layers feature.

Turning on page counts

1. With your script open, tap Layers on the Top Toolbar;

2. In the Layers side panel, find the Info Layers section and toggle on 8th Page Counts;

3. Scriptation automatically generates the page count for every scene and adds it to either the top or bottom of each scene.

Customizing page counts

Open the Settings option at the bottom of the Layers side panel to customize:

• Location — Top of Scene (near the header) or Bottom of Scene;
• Color — Black, Red, or Blue.

Page counts in Tagging reports and integrations

The same page-count calculation Scriptation uses for the 8th Page Counts Info Layer also shows in your Tagging breakdown reports and partner integrations. Scene Page Counts are automatically included when you export to tools like Cinapse, Shamel Studio, Think Crew, or SetHero — no manual entry required.

How the calculation works

Scriptation's 8th page counts are based on text extraction — essentially, the number of lines of text the app detects for each scene — rather than on the physical page size (US Letter or A4) or the page number printed on the page. Because of this, counts may not always exactly match the physical space a scene takes up on a PDF page, especially once A-pages and other revisions get involved.

Calculating page counts is inherently more of an art than a science: script supervisors and ADs often factor in subjective elements (like whether a scene is dialogue- or action-heavy) that affect scheduling and run-time, which Scriptation's algorithm doesn't account for. Because of this, treat Scriptation's 8th page counts as a helpful estimate and starting point rather than a final, official count — you may still need to reconcile them with AD boards.

If your counts seem off, double-check that any custom formatting in your script isn't confusing the text extraction, and note that any scene should always be at least 1/8 (a 0/8 reading is not expected — if you see this, it's worth reporting, along with the specific scene number(s) affected).

If you're seeing counts that are consistently off compared to your AD boards, it's worth sending in a copy of the script file through the Troubleshooting Portal so it can be checked for any formatting quirks confusing the text extraction.

Editing individual page counts

Scriptation doesn't currently support a manual override for calculated 8th page counts, but you can achieve the same result by duplicating the 8th Page Counts Info Layer into an editable layer and adjusting the numbers by hand to match your AD's boards. Full-script page count totals

Scriptation currently only calculates page counts per scene — there isn't a built-in way to automatically sum up the total page count for an entire script. There are workarounds for calculating a cumulative total manually; if this is something you'd like to see built in, add your vote to the Feature Request board.

Totaling page counts by scene heading/location

Tagging reports (Breakdown Summary) list every scene occurrence separately, so a recurring location like "INT. CAFE" appears as its own entry each time it shows up in the script rather than being consolidated into one total. There's currently no built-in report that sums page counts by scene heading or location.

To get totals without adding them up by hand, export your Tagging report as CSV instead of PDF — the CSV can be opened in Excel or Google Sheets, where you can sort and sum by location. See Creating Tagging Exports: Breakdown Summary, Element Report, & Category Report for steps.
